PI into attempted murder of sisters now set for April 12

The preliminary inquiry (PI) into the attempted murder of sisters Sharon Taylor and Michelle Richards has now been set for April 12, after the prosecution yesterday reported that it was not ready to proceed.

The PI into the charge against Taylor’s husband, Malvin Taylor, was scheduled to begin yesterday. When the case was called before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 8, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Prosecutor Stephen Telford related that the prosecution was ready to commence the PI at a time convenient to the court and then yesterday’s date was granted. When the matter was called yesterday, however, Telford requested another adjournment for commencement, explaining that the prosecution was not ready. The April 12 adjournment was subsequently granted.

Telford said that statements were ready and would have been served yesterday while adding that the prosecution will be calling nine witnesses.
Meanwhile, no details were given as to why the PI was postponed.

Taylor had been denied his pre-trial liberty on both occasions when he appeared at the Magistrates’ Court. However his attorney Nigel Hughes had made a successful application before the High Court and Taylor was admitted to bail in the sum of $600,000.

The allegation against Taylor, 34, of 51 ‘D’ Field Sophia is that on January 26, at Quamina Street, Georgetown, he attempted to murder Sharon Taylor and Michelle Richards by discharging loaded firearms at the said women. On the same day, he is also accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Aubrey Smith with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm to him.

Taylor, when he made his first court appearance on February 4, was not required to plead to the indictable charges of attempted murder and discharging loaded firearms when they were read to him.
