Minister of Commerce Manniram Prashad is assuring commuters of the No. 32 minibus route that the fare has not increased but changes are likely to be made for short drops.
Prashad said that commuters who travel from Georgetown to Parika and all the stops in between will, at this time, continue to pay the regular fare of $360. According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, the minister said the Consumer Affairs Department has been monitoring the situation. He also noted that government has slashed the excise tax on both gasoline and diesel in an effort to keep prices below $1,000.
Prashad said the ministry and the bus associations held a meeting to discuss the issue with the No. 32 association and it was agreed that a fare increase was not necessary. However, the meeting also agreed to meet in a month’s time to review the route’s internal fare structure. Changes are likely to be made for the short drops along the route.
No. 32 Minibus Association President James Kowsil said some drivers had complained that they are being shafted some customers. Prashad gave assurances that the changes to the internal fare structure would be based on recommendations made by the association. The minister also noted that the Consumer Affairs Department is monitoring the calls for an increase in the fare by drivers of the University of Guyana/Georgetown route.
