Cop under close arrest over Friendship shooting

A policeman is under close arrest after being accused of shooting a Hadfield Street youth in the foot during an altercation at Friendship, East Bank Demerara on Sunday night.

Police yesterday said that at about 10:40 pm on Sunday, Anthony Charles, 20, of Hadfield Street, was allegedly shot and injured to his left foot during an altercation with a police rank at Friendship. Charles was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and sent away.

The police said that the rank was not issued with a service firearm or a personal firearm and has denied the allegation. He is under close arrest as the investigations continue, the police said.

Meanwhile, police have arrested five men after ranks found an unlicensed gun in a car during a search at Dora. The police said that at about 8am yesterday, police ranks at a road block at Dora, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, stopped and searched motor car HB 7643 during which an unlicensed 9mm. Beretta pistol with ten rounds was found.

Five men who were in the vehicle were arrested and are in custody.
