Surveillance camera lands Diamond man on larceny charge

Royston George, of 25 First Street, Diamond, East Bank Deme-rara was yesterday charged with larceny at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, which heard that he was identified by surveillance camera footage.

George, 27, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge that he stole a laptop bag, a laptop, books and other items amounting to $855,000, from Reaz Khan of Reaz Electrical Agency.

Police Corporal Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, told the court that on March 4 at Georgetown, Khan parked his car at Pegasus Hotel and left. He returned 30 minutes later and noticed his driver’s side door opened. On checking, he discovered the items missing. He then made a report to the guard there and was able to retrieve a tape from a camera positioned on his vehicle. From this tape, the accused was identified and was later arrested and charged.

Attorney Mark Waldron, representing George, told the court that the defence has been asking for the camera footage but was yet to be presented with it. Waldron asked that his client be granted reasonable bail.

Harvey objected to bail on grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence but the magistrate was inclined to grant the man bail, which she set at $250,000. The matter was transferred to Court 2 for March 11, when a report and fixture for trial will be presented.
