GPL workers accused of stealing pre-paid meter

Three men accused of stealing a pre-paid meter and other items from the Guyana Power (GPL) and Light Co. were yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 bail each.

The allegation against Orlando Roach, Wayne Williams and Conrad Quentin is that between October 25, 2010 and March 8, they stole a pre-paid meter, a pre-paid enclosure, one length of duplex service cable and a communication cable valued $27,359.

The trio denied the simple larceny charge when it was read to them before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In presenting the facts of the case, police corporal Lionel Harvey told the court that the three were contract workers of the power company and had removed the items to install at Sheldon Cheddi’s house. According to Harvey, the electricity to Cheddi’s house had been disconnected and the trio had charged the said Cheddi, who remains on the run, $75,000 for installing the meter.  A warrant has since been issued for Cheddi’s arrest.

The corporal told the court that the GPL had checked their records which revealed that the items were removed by the three and linked the installation to Cheddi’s house.

They were ordered to return to court on March 15.
