No leads yet on murder of Friendship businessman

Relatives of businessman Carlos Persaud are still at a loss as to why the man was killed and up to yesterday were still awaiting feedback from investigators.

“We still don’t know anything…we didn’t hear anything from police today [yesterday] and we are still waiting on them to tell us something. We don’t understand why he was killed,” a relative told this newspaper via telephone yesterday afternoon.

Persaud, 32, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara left his home on Friday afternoon to buy stocks for a shop he operates in Georgetown. The man failed to return home that night and his body was discovered with two gunshot wounds to the back in the Le Repentir Cemetery on Saturday morning.

Shortly before Persaud’s body was discovered his car, PMM 2625, was found in C Field, Sophia, East Coast Demerara following reports by residents. This newspaper had been reliably informed that an anonymous phone call led to the discovery of the man’s body.

Meanwhile, a senior police source told this newspaper yesterday that investigators are yet to determine exactly what valuables Persaud was carrying when he left home. However, it has been established that Persaud did not have a large sum of cash in his possession.

“His cellular phone is missing and we are still to determine exactly what jewellery he was wearing…we are not certain if he was carrying anything else of value but based on what his family has told us he was not carrying a large sum of money,” the source said.

Police, according to the source, have not ruled out robbery as a possible motive and are currently pursuing several leads.
