Economics major charged in cell phone snatching

University of Guyana Economics Major Devon Baptise was on Tuesday accused of snatching a young woman’s cell phone.

Baptise was placed on $40,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charge, before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Baptise is that on March 11, at Georgetown, he stole from the person of Khadella Robinson a LG cell phone, valued $30,000.

The prosecution is contending that Robinson was walking along the road when Baptise accosted her and relieved her of the item mentioned in the charge. The police were later summoned and after investigations, Baptise was arrested and charged.

He was granted bail on the condition that he reports to Constable Seeram at the Brickdam Police Station every Wednesday and Friday at 9am. The case will be called again on April 12 for trial.
