Guyanese man hangs self in Suriname after allegedly killing stepson

A Guyanese man, who reportedly caused the death of his stepson after he doused the child’s mother with gasoline and set her afire while the child was in her arms, on Wednesday hung himself in Suriname after being on the run since Tuesday, the Star Nieuws reported today.

According to the report the police found the lifeless body of Lante Johnson hanging from a rope in a barn in the town of Santo Boma. The report further said that bystanders discovered Johnson’s body and summoned the police.

Earlier the news agency had reported that baby Wiresh Dihal died at the University Hospital on Tuesday night after he suffered severe burns to his body.
Wiresh was said to be in the arms of his mother when Johnson, his stepfather, threw gasoline on him and his mother and set them afire. The child suffered severe burns to his face, abdomen and back. Every effort was made in the hospital to save his life, but to no avail.
The mother of the child had no significant injuries. She was allowed home after treatment.
