UK tightens student visa system

(BBC) Students from the Caribbean and other regions outside the European Union will find it much tougher to study in the UK under new measures announced by Britain.

Under the plans, which will be phased in from next month, individuals will need to provide even more proof that they are coming to the UK to study, rather than work, and must show they have the financial means to support themselves.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the measures were aimed at rooting out abuse of the system.

But the shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, accused the government of trying to meet tough immigration targets by going after the economically valuable foreign students market.
