Taxi driver took over $3M from Chinese national in visa scam

A taxi driver was yesterday placed on $250,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after he was accused of attempting to commit a fraud.

The allegation against Mohan Sahibdeen is that between July 30 and 31, 2010, with intent to defraud, he obtained just over $3 million from a Chinese national, claiming that he was in a position to obtain a visa for him.

While the defendant’s attorney Vic Pooran appealed for reasonable bail, the prosecution requested that it be given in a substantial amount.

The defendant was then placed on $250,000 bail and the matter transferred to Court Three for March 30.
