Miner accused of disfiguring mother of his child

– granted $100,000 bail

After more than six months on the run, a miner who allegedly disfigured the face of the mother of his child and caused her to lose sight in one eye, was caught, charged and released on bail when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Sheldon Braithwaite, a miner of 301 Goed Fortuin Squatting Area, West Bank Demerara denied a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm and was released on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin. It is alleged that on September 5, 2010 at Goed Fortuin, Braithwaite unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm upon Tiffany Jackson.

According to reports, Braithwaite attacked Jackson, 28, following an argument at her home. He reportedly used a beer bottle in the attack. Jackson was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she was treated but later transferred to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. Jackson was then referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital since her right eye was damaged. She has since lost the sight in that eye.

Following the alleged attack, the miner fled; he was recently caught by police. The court was told that the accused and complainant have a five-year-old child together.

After being placed on bail, Braithwaite was ordered to return to court on April 15 at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
