Soda company accuses saleswoman of theft

A former RA Soda Factory saleswoman was yesterday accused of stealing $4,000 from a company truck.

Susan Mangal, 20, of 44 Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara was admitted to bail in the sum of $85,000, after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Mangal is that on January 12, at Bourda Market, being a clerk or servant to Fazil Hanif, the owner of RA Soda Factory, she stole $4,000.

After being arraigned, Mangal denied a charge of larceny by clerk or servant when it was read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecution’s facts are that Mangal, who worked as a saleswoman on the company’s beverage truck, removed the money when the driver of the vehicle disembarked the vehicle and entered the market. Police Corporal Venetta Pindar said that after police investigations were conducted, Mangal was arrested and charged for the offence to which she reportedly admitted.

Pindar noted that Mangal was employed with the company until the time of the incident.

The prosecution had no objection to bail but requested that it be set at a substantial sum to ensure that Mangal returns to stand trial. The matter will be called again on June 2.
