Kitty man hospitalized after being shot by police

A 23-year old Kitty man was yesterday afternoon hospitalized with two gunshot wounds following a confrontation with the police on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Reports are that some time around 3 pm yesterday, Kevin Maloney of Lot 29, Queen Street , Kitty, sustained a gunshot wound to the hip and right hand respectively, during a confrontation with the police near a creek on the highway.

A young woman who was with a group of friends at the creek yesterday afternoon recounted that Maloney was standing on the roadway when somebody called out to him from across the road. She said that the persons began to laugh at the young man and during this time the police officers who were on the opposite side of the road from him called out to him.

She said that after he crossed the road, the ranks told him to enter the police vehicle but he did not heed their request. She said that the police then attempted to handcuff Maloney and it was during this time that he was shot.

Reports are that the man, who is well known to the police, was being sought by the lawmen for questioning in relation to a robbery, among other things.

According to the man’s relatives, Maloney had been frequently ‘harassed’ by the police.

The young man was under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday afternoon where he was being treated. His condition was listed as stable.
