City worker to be charged in tractor death

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) tractor worker who drove over the head of an elderly man, killing him instantly, remained in police custody up to late last night.

Stabroek News has been reliably informed that a death by dangerous driving charge will be instituted, following a post-mortem examination of the body scheduled for this morning.

Compton Lacon, 73, of Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara died in the accident, which occurred at Water Street and the John Fernandes Wharf Access Road, which runs alongside Bounty Supermarket.

Police investigations revealed that about 12:30pm, an M&CC tractor with trailer attached was proceeding north along the western side of Water Street while Lacon was walking along the western pavement on Water Street. Lacon was struck by the left rear wheel of the tractor as the driver was negotiating a turn. Lacon died on the spot, the police said.

The tractor driver had fled the scene after the impact but returned sometime later and was arrested by the police.

Moments before he was killed, Lacon had purchased a birthday card for his son.
