Ex-cop accused of causing pedestrian’s death

An ex-policeman was yesterday placed on $150,000 bail over causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that Jermain Arthur, 22, of 1088 Amelia’s Ward, Linden on August 18, 2010, at about 7:45pm, while driving hire car HB 3556, was involved in an accident which resulted in the death of pedestrian Joan Earle.

Arthur, who had been attached to the Tactical Services Unit, is currently facing five other charges, including failure to report an accident, failure to stop after an accident, failure to render assistance, breach of insurance and being an unlicensed hire car driver.

Previously he had been charged with dangerous driving but since Earle died, the dangerous driving charge was dismissed and the causing death by dangerous driving was instituted.

Earle had been in a coma since the accident and it was reported that she was brain dead after being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she succumbed to the injuries.
Arthur was placed on $150,000 bail and is to return to court on June 21.
