Man stole underwear from mother, threatened to burn granny’s house

A man accused of stealing a quantity of underwear from his mother and threatening to burn down his grandmother’s house was on Wednesday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Ehud James is that last Friday  at Georgetown, he stole a quantity of underwear valued $10,000 from Roslyn James.

Additionally, on April 9 at Georgetown also, Ehud James made use of threatening language to Winifred James.

The man denied the charges of simple larceny and threatening language respectively when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar in presenting the facts of the case said that the accused is the son of Roslyn and grandson of Winifred with whom he resides.

On the respective days, Pindar said that the defendant stole the items and threatened to burn down his grandmother’s house.

A police report was subsequently made which later led to Ehud James’s arrest and charge.

According to the corporal, the defendant is a smoker and alcoholic who behaves in a disorderly manner and abuses members of his family.

Initially, the East La Penitence resident had accepted using threatening language towards his grandmother,  adding that it could be explained. After the facts were related to the court by the prosecution, however, the magistrate then asked the man if he had threatened to burn down his grandmother’s house.

Ehud James responded in the negative after which a not guilty plea was entered.

After the presentation of the prosecution’s facts, Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry asked the accused if there was another address he could move to pending the determination of the matter.

At this point  the man’s mother interjected, indicating that he has no other place to reside but  stressing that he is very undisciplined and she would like him to be disciplined.

The acting chief magistrate explained to the woman that the courts will deal with the accused in the appropriate manner and impose necessary conditions as the matter progresses and a trial is conducted.

She further explained that at this point of the case, the court was concerned about the man being able to provide an address to facilitate him being granted his pre-trial liberty.

Ehud James then gave the Kitty address of an aunt.

The accused was then told by the magistrate that he would be admitted to bail in the sum of $25,000 for each charge.

His matter was transferred to Court Two for Monday  for reports and fixtures for trial.
