The presidential guard, who was shot on Saturday while trying to assist the victim of a robbery, remains in a serious condition.
Ransford Liverpool, 30, was up to yesterday afternoon a patient at a city hospital. The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds about the body after he came under a volley of bullets near the junction of Avenue of Republic and North Street.
When Stabroek News visited the hospital several relatives were gathered waiting to see Liverpool. The injured man’s wife, when approached by this newspaper, declined to comment.
“No, no. I don’t want to say anything right now. He is there…in pain,” the woman said.
One of the bullets passed through Liverpool’s left thigh and another was lodged in his face. Liverpool underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night but this newspaper has been unable to ascertain whether the bullet was removed.
A police release issued hours after the incident said that at about 4:40pm businesswoman Jennifer Mohamed, 47, was walking along Avenue of Republic heading to her parked motor vehicle when she was confronted by the three men. “The men, who came up on bicycles, demanded a bag that she had in her possession containing over $2 million and some documents… which she handed over to them,” the release said.
Liverpool, according to police, was passing at the same time on his motorcycle, witnessed what was happening and decided to render assistance. There was an exchange of gunfire, during which he was injured. The men fled the scene on foot leaving their bicycles behind. A man has since been arrested and is in custody assisting with the investigations, the release said.
