Battered NA inmate died of fractured skull

A post-mortem examination performed yesterday on Sebastian Cleto, the inmate of the New Amsterdam Prison who succumbed days after he was beaten, revealed that he died as a result of brain haemorrhage and a fractured skull.

The examination was performed at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) mortuary by government pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh.

Last Wednesday, the 22-year-old North West District resident and murder accused was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital in an unconscious state.

He was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where he remained until the time of his death on Monday morning.

Director of Prisons Dale Erskine had issued a press release following the incident saying that Cleto and another prisoner, Andy Adams were injured when they sought to represent a fellow inmate.

Adams was treated and sent back to the prison, Erskine said, while Cleto who was rendered unconscious from to an injury to the head, was transferred to the GPH for further evaluation and treatment.

It was also reported that prisoner Chris Rampersaud was said to have been injured during a fight with another inmate, Desmond Isaac, in the Male Block.

The two men reportedly had a misunderstanding over an ongoing case in which they are jointly charged. Rampersaud is also currently serving a two-year sentence for break and enter and larceny.

Prison Officer Tony Lewis was reportedly injured after he intervened in the incident.

Erskine said too that the police are investigating the incidents at the prison as criminal acts and the accused inmates are currently isolated from the general population.

Charges will soon be laid against the two prisoners who reportedly carried out the attack.
