Domestic worker remanded on ganja and cocaine charges

A domestic worker accused of trafficking in a quantity of cannabis and cocaine at Alexander Street was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation against Juann Bynoe is that on May 6 at Georgetown, she had in her possession 150 grammes of cannabis and 8 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The woman denied the charges when they were read to her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

In presenting the prosecution’s facts of the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question at about 23:30 hours, ranks conducted a search at a premises at 117 Alexander Street, Bourda when the woman was nabbed with narcotics in her possession.

Pindar said that after the police conducted a search the suspected cannabis and cocaine were found in the defendant’s shoulder bag. The court then heard that the accused was told of the offence committed and taken to the police station where the suspected illicit drugs were weighed in her presence and amounted to that stated in the charge.

When given a chance to speak, Bynoe told the court that the items were not hers and neither were they found on her. Instead, she said that they were found in the area where she was.

When told that she will be remanded to prison, the accused told the court that she would plead guilty. But since she did not accept the facts of the prosecution, the magistrate cautioned Bynoe that she could not accept her guilty plea.

The matter was transferred to Court Five for May 13.
