Bullet to the head killed Mortley – PME

A post-mortem examination (PME) yesterday revealed that former boxer Linden Mortley died as a result of a gunshot injury to the head.

Police investigators in the meantime are exploring several leads in the case but are still to ascertain the motive for the slaying of the 44-year-old Sussex Street, Charlestown resident.

Stabroek News was told that during that PME which was done at the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary, Dr Nehaul Singh recovered a “flattened” warhead from Mortley’s body.

A senior police officer told this newspaper on Tuesday that that no one has been detained for questioning into the incident before pointing out that that “the boys are working”.

Stabroek News revisited the scene on Tuesday but residents were unable to provide any useful information. No one recalled seeing anything suspicious before the gunshots rang out. One resident pointed out that the area where the shooting occurred is very dark and there are no houses in proximity to the bridge on which Mortley was later found.

No one recalled seeing anyone running or driving away from the scene. Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday that there is no new information in the case.

Meanwhile, when contacted Mortley’s father Cyril declined to speak with this newspaper.

Persaud had said on Monday that Mortley had been known to the police for “in excess of ten years.” He stated that the man had links to organized crime, and specifically narcotics trafficking. More recently, he added, the man has been linked to firearm trafficking.

Mortley had been charged with criminal offences three times recently and according to Persaud, the man had a firearm and a grenade offence pending before the court. However, he could not provide details on these cases.

Around 7:45 pm on Sunday, residents heard what sounded like gunshots and on checking later found Mortley “lying on a bridge with suspected gunshot wounds to his head.” The bridge Mortley was found on is called ‘Busta Bridge’ and it leads from Festival City to Guyhoc.

A relative had told this newspaper at the scene on Sunday that Mortley was earlier picked up from his home. According to residents, the dead man’s pockets were pulled out of his pants and emptied by the shooter, raising questions that the perpetrators were either after something he had on his person or wanted his death to appear to be robbery-related.

Persaud had said there was not enough evidence to point to an execution-style killing.
