(ICC) A number of rising and talented cricketers have improved their positions in the Reliance ICC ODI Player Rankings following the conclusion of the West Indies and India series which the tourists won 3-2 on Thursday.
Rohit Sharma, who won the player of the series award for his series aggregate of 257 runs, has jumped 32 places in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen to occupy 49th position while former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was the second most successful batsman in the series with 216 runs, has moved up six places to claim 32nd position.
Other batsmen moving in the right direction include Virat Kohli in seventh (up by one place), Lendl Simmons in 53rd (up by 13 places), Kieron Pollard in 65th (by up 18 places), Darren Bravo in 67th (up by 11 places), Parthiv Patel in 103rd (up by 75 places) and Marlon Samuels in 106 (by up 16 places).
Batsmen losing ground include rival captains Suresh Raina (36th) and Darren Sammy (107th) as well as Yusuf Pathan (55th).
In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, Amit Mishra has been rewarded for his 11 wickets in the series with a jump of 108 places which has put him in 65th position while Andre Russell, who took eight wickets in the series, has rocketed 85 positions to 127th spot.
India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has moved up six places to 11th position after taking four wickets in the series while fast bowlers Praveen Kumar and Munaf Patel have improved their positions by four places each to claim 25th and 27th spots, respectively.
Meanwhile in the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table, India has retained its second position but its lead over third-placed Sri Lanka has been trimmed to just one ratings point after it conceded two ratings points for a 3-2 series win.
In contrast, the West Indies has gained five ratings points, which has put it on 77 – 10 points clear of ninth-placed Bangladesh.
Test series
Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar is set to lose his top position in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen when number-one ranked India goes head to head with seventh-placed West Indies in the three-Test series in Kingston, Jamaica, on Monday.
Tendulkar, who won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award at the LG ICC Awards in Bengaluru last year, currently shares the number-one spot with Jacques Kallis of South Africa.
However, all this will change when the player rankings are updated after the
Kingston Test as the 38-year-old icon has opted out of the series. As a player loses one per cent of his ratings points for every Test he misses, Tendulkar will drop points which will give Kallis sole possession of the number-one position.
The Mumbai-born batsman could potentially drop behind Jonathan England’s Trott. As the 30-year-old Warwickshire batsman is still in the qualification period for batsmen, it is likely that he will move even further up the ladder depending on how he performs in the remainder of the third Test against Sri Lanka which is currently in progress in Southampton.
Like Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan will not only drop points but might also slip in rankings moving forward after also deciding to miss the West Indies series.
In the batting chart, Sehwag is currently in sixth position and trails
seventh-placed Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies by 11 ratings points. Gambhir shares 15th position with Graeme Smith of South Africa as the two trail England’s Ian Bell by 11 ratings points while Zaheer Khan is in fifth position on the bowling table where he leads Australia’s Mitchell Johnston by 21 ratings points.
Meanwhile in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table, India leads the West Indies by 42 ratings points. As the rankings system is weighted to reflect this difference, India’s failure to win the series comfortably will mean it will drop points.
In fact, India will stay at 128 ratings points only if it wins the series 3-0 but will slip to 127 ratings points if it wins the series 2-0 while it will drop to 126 ratings points if it wins 1-0 or 2-1.
In a sharp contrast, India will drop six ratings points if the West Indies wins the series 1-0 or 2-1 while Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side will drop to 121 ratings points in case of a 2-0 win for the West Indies.
The West Indies’ series win will not only mean the gap between the top two ranked Test sides will be narrowed, it will put it ahead of Pakistan in sixth position for the first time since the ratings were introduced in June 2003.
