De Edward schoolgirl dies in accident, brother seriously hurt

A nine-year-old West Coast Berbice schoolgirl was killed and her brother seriously injured after they were hit by a speeding car this morning. Police are looking for the driver who jumped through the car window and escaped.

Jaswattie Ramnaugh of   De Edward Ketting, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital. She sustained serious head injuries. Her brother Vijay age seven has been transferred to the Georgetown Hospital in a serious condition. He sustained injuries to his head, feet and other parts of the body.

Reports are that the two left home for the Cotton Tree Primary School around 8 am but were sent back home by a teacher who told them that their end of term examination was scheduled for this afternoon.

While walking along the Cotton Tree public road, a speeding car coming from the opposite direction hit them head-on. The driver of the vehicle lost control while coming around a turn in the road.

Stabroek News was told that this is the second serious accident he has been involved in.
