National Qaseeda winners to compete in Suriname next month

The Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) hosted the National Qaseeda Competi-tion recently to mark the end of Eid Milad un Nabi 2011 and select contestants for the International Qaseeda Mehfil set for Suriname in July.

According to a press release Husain B Sakur of the Diamond Masjid “sang his way into the hearts of judges and the crowd” and walked away with the first place in the Senior Male Category. Bibi Shakila Wahab of the ACIC took the top position while Anasha Khan, also of the ACIC won the Junior Female title. Zaheer Mohamed of Mon Repos won the Junior Male title. In addition, Azad Bacchus of Mon Repos placed second in the Senior Male category followed by Faizul Bacchus, also of Mon Repos, and Mohamed Amin of Ogle.

The contest was judged by a panel including Dr Azad Khan, Towheed Hassan of India, Mohamed Idris Ali of Bangladesh and Surinamese Izhak Yanki and Hafiz Sarafat Ali. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, performing the functions of president, PNCR presidential nominee David Granger, US Embassy Representative Regis Prevot and others attended the function. The competition was hosted by the ACIC in collaboration with the Muslim Youth League of Guyana and the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman.
