MP warns of serious pesticide danger in Nickerie

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – The widespread use of pesticides for rice farming in Nickerie has caused major environmental damage such as the death of countless birds, fish and plants.

This was revealed by Pertjajah Luhur Parliamentarian Marsidih Soetimin during yesterday’s budget debates. He also expressed fears for public health. Opposition Parliamentarian Shailendra Girjasingh (NF/VHP) said in reaction that such problems are “logical” when so many pesticides are used on such a large scale. Girjasingh also mentioned the irresponsible way in which waste associated with pesticides such as bottles are being processed. Besides that, garbage collection in Nickerie leaves much to be desired.
