Woman remanded over cocaine in mauby, passion fruit containers

A woman was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after being accused of trafficking in cocaine found in containers labeled mauby and passion fruit.

Ananka Hintzen on June 25 allegedly trafficked in 1 kilogramme and 40 grammes of cocaine.

The court was told that Sherline Yorrick, who was travelling to the United States,  was found at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri with the substance in containers of juice concentrate, labelled mauby and passion fruit.

Yorrick was arrested but told the police that she was given the containers by Hintzen to carry to the U.S.

Both women were placed in police custody and the matter was sent to the DPP. Based on investigations, Yorrick was released while Hintzen was charged with the offence.

Hintzen, who plead not guilty to the offence, was refused bail and is to reappear in Springlands Magistrates’ Court on July 7.
