Students find decomposing body in Hadfield St. drain

School children yesterday afternoon stumbled upon the decomposing remains of an unidentified man lying in a Hadfield Street drain, behind the St. Stanislaus College.

Stabroek News understands that the man, who was dressed in a red t-shirt and red track pants, had been seen cleaning a bus in the area on Thursday morning. This is according to another man, who usually cleans vehicles in the area. He said he did not know the dead man’s name or where he was from.

Reports are that around 3:30 pm, several school children were walking by when their attention was drawn to a strong stench. On checking, they found the bloated body and quickly raised an alarm.

This newspaper was told that based on the state of the body, it was in the drain for as least 24 hours. It would have swollen considerably and start to decompose because it was lying in water, Stabroek News was told.

Some persons expressed shock that the body was so close to both the school and the Brickdam Police Station and no one saw it prior to yesterday afternoon. Crime scene ranks conducted investigations before the body was transported to the Lyken’s Funeral Home.
