New mother still critical from stab wounds

Malini Baseer of 131 Fourth Street, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, who was on Thursday last severely stabbed, remains a patient of the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Sources said the mother of 3, who recently delivered a baby by caesarean section, was stabbed by her husband, Salim Baseer, from whom she had been separated for the past 2 weeks.

The source, who preferred not to be named, stated that the man arrived at the home around 6.30 am to take his children to school. She explained that the children, before taking their baths, would normally count to three, throw the water and then scream. “That is why I ain’t take it for nothing when I hear them screaming,” she said.  However, the woman said, she decided to take a look from her bedroom window where she noticed that a crowd had gathered in front of Baseer’s home. “When I went over, I see that de girl de already get stab,” she said, adding that the young woman was holding a bloody cloth to her stomach. The source explained that Baseer’s uncle, who resides just a street away, arrived and quickly took his niece to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, from where she was transferred to the GPH.

Reports reaching this newspaper are that the Baseers were married some 9 years ago.

The husband is said to be a taxi driver, operating in Georgetown and was described to be a very pleasant individual. “They used to live very nice. You wont even know anybody deh home in the house. I don’t know how this coulda happen. It is very shocking,” a friend of Baseer stated.

Meanwhile, when Stabroek News visited the GPH yesterday, a close friend of the woman disclosed that she didn’t share a close relationship with her relatives and stated that her mother was due to return to Guyana last evening. The friend said that this was not the first instance of abuse the woman had experienced at her husband’s hands, adding that the man had attempted to run Malini over with his motor vehicle in the past.

The friend related that she is “coming around… She opened her eyes but still not talking. She recently get a baby by c-section so that is causing some complications. Doctors are giving her a lot of medication that is helping her sleep.”

The friend also stated that Salim Baseer was still in custody at the Leonora Police Station.
