Suriname Ambassador urges Berbice-Nickerie trade links

Suriname Ambassador to Guyana Manorma Soeknandan has urged businesses in Berbice to explore closer ties with Nickerie.

Ambassador Soeknandan made this call at the Second Annual Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI) Appreciation Dinner held on Saturday.

According to the UCCCI, in her presentation on Nickerie and Berbice, she encouraged business persons to diversify and capitalise on business opportunities in Nickerie. She also encouraged them to make education for themselves and their offspring a priority, which would allow their businesses to reach beyond the limited reach of sole proprietorships which are abundant in both regions.

The Ambassador also noted that there are several issues that need to be rectified in order to move in the right direction. These include closer collaboration between educational institutions in order to remove the language barrier, as well as optimising the use of the Canawaima Ferry Service.

Meanwhile, the UCCCI said its President Vishnu Doerga, in his address at the dinner, highlighted the progress the chamber had made over the past year. He noted that it had increased its membership; provided exposure for members at foreign trade fairs; and boosted its drive in capacity building. The group also said it was grateful for the USAID Governance Enhancement Project for its support in arranging specialised training in several fields. Doerga also alluded to the importance of improved cross border relations.
