Shot miner critical after gunmen raid North West camp

A miner is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Hospital, after he was shot several times by gunmen, who invaded his camp at Five Star Backdam, North West District this morning.

Hospital officials gave the man’s name as Felix Defoima and said he sustained multiple gunshot wounds about the body. Stabroek News was told that the man sustained wounds to the neck and back, among other places.

According to reports, the man was in a camp “washing down” when the gunmen invaded and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. The gunmen later escaped with an undisclosed quantity of raw gold, while Defoima was rushed to the Port Kaituma Hospital, and later air dashed to the city.

A police force official, when contacted, said that the details at the moment are sketchy but a team has been dispatched to the area to investigate.
