Brazilian shot, injured as gang robs mining camp at Five Star

A four-man gang invaded a mining camp at Five Star Backdam, North West District on Monday and in addition to shooting Brazilian Felix De Souza, they robbed two others of raw gold and a firearm.

Police said in a press release yesterday that they are investigating the incident which occurred around 07:00 hrs.

Investigations so far have revealed that the perpetrators, two of whom were armed with handguns entered a mining camp and held up the two Brazilians and took away a quantity of raw gold, a digital camera and a licensed .32 pistol with seven rounds from them.

In the process the men discharged several rounds, hitting De Souza to his shoulder and jaw.

The wounded De Souza was transported to Port Kaituma and later flown to the city.

Hospital sources said the man was admitted to the Georgetown Hospital after receiving treatment. However he refused admission and took his own discharge. His condition was listed as serious, this newspaper was told.

Stabroek News was unable to make contact with De Souza.

The police release said that a team of police investigators was dispatched to the area and during investigations arrested two men in another mining camp in whose possession 105 grammes of cocaine and 1 kilogramme 350 grammes of marijuana were found.
