Bajan cancer patients in limbo after machine fails

(Barbados Nation) Cancer patients in need of radiation treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) are in limbo because the radiation machine is not working.

An upset patient told the DAILY NATION yesterday that it was three weeks since the lone machine had broken down. He said hospital staff were just turning patients away and were unable to tell them when the machine would be working again.

“I have been going there for the past three weeks, and nobody can say when the machine will be working. Yesterday quite a few of us were there and we were all turned away. I am concerned because I was supposed to be having the treatment for six weeks and three weeks have passed without me getting on the machine,” said the upset man, who requested anonymity.

When contacted, chief executive officer of the QEH, Dexter James, said the hospital was in the process of procuring a machine, but he took offence at the fact that the patient had reported the matter to this newspaper.
