(Barbados Nation) Thirty-five-year-old Shawn Anderson Sealy of Fairfield Black Rock, St Michael was shot dead by police in the area of Waterhall Land Bank Hall yesterday afternoon.
According to the Royal Barbados Police Force’s public relations officer Inspector David Welch, police were looking for Sealy in connection with a case of aggravated burglary that occurred yesterday afternoon. He said that police received information that Sealy was in the area of Hill Road, Eagle Hall St Michael and responded about 6:30 p.m. Welch said that the suspect was seen, attacked police officers and fled the area.
Additional support was requested by those police officers and he was again encountered in Waterhall Land where he attacked the police with a cutlass and also threw bottles and stones damaging a police vehicle.
The inspector reported that he also attacked a police officer, who fearing for his life, drew his service pistol [gun] and fired, striking the suspect who collapsed and died.
Residents, who gathered on the scene which was tightly secured by police as Sealy’s body lay in a track, said that Sealy was mentally challenged and should not have been shot.
One resident, who refused to be identified, told the DAILY NATION: “Shawn was tripping and telling them [police] that I mad, I mad. The people out here tell the police that he mad. They said that they are going to call the mental van. I ain’t seeing no mental van up to now, but I see more police cars coming. I have nothing else to say.”
