Canal man missing after tourist boat capsizes

A boat on an excursion to Marshall Falls, Mazaruni River capsized after the propeller got entangled on a wire rope that was securing a dredge to shore leaving one man missing.
The vessel was filled with tourists who were rescued by other boats that were pushing the dredge up the rapids. They are currently at the Bartica Hospital being treated. Among them is a baby. The missing man has been identified as Ray Manram of Canal No.1 Polder, West Demerara.
The incident occurred at about midday when the boat was heading down the rapids on the way back to Bartica (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).
Rescuers are currently searching the rapids for the missing man who was wearing a life jacket. The police are on their way to the site.
A Bartica resident who spoke with the captain told Stabroek News that the dredge was heading up the rapids at the time of the incident while the tour boat was heading down.
The dredge was being pushed up the rapids by several power boats while wire ropes secured it to the shore. The propeller of the tour boat which was powered by two 200 horsepower engines entangled with one of the ropes and the vessel capsized throwing the passengers into the water.
