Suriname fishing grounds still closed to Caricom

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO — Suriname keeps refusing the other CARICOM-member countries access to its fishing grounds. This was also the policy of the previous administration. The establishing of commonly managed fishing grounds remains a point of discussion within the region and is considered one of the most important pillars of economic integration. The most important reason for establishing of commonly managed fishing grounds is the fact that fishing grounds are increasingly plundered or have even been destroyed in the region due to overfishing. Suriname’s advise to the region remains: first take measures against overfishing to help restore fishing grounds before there can be talk of fishing freely in each other’s waters.
