Minibus operator robbed another of $60,000 – court told

A minibus operator who robbed another of $60,000 was yesterday placed on $70,000 bail after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Joel Porter is that on August 27 at Georgetown, he robbed Jobol Nurse of $60,000.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

According to the facts presented to the court by Police Corporal Venetta Pindar,  Nurse was walking along the road when the accused and an accomplice  went up to the VC on a bicycle. The defendant’s accomplice subsequently came off the bicycle and robbed the VC and then he rejoined the accused and rode away.

The prosecution after stating the facts to the court objected to bail on the grounds that there is a likelihood of interference of the VC by the defendant. The objection was, however, overruled by the magistrate and the man was placed on $70,000 bail. The matter will be called again on October 24.
