Two Russians remanded on firearm, ammo charges

Two Russian nationals were on Monday remanded to prison after they pleaded not guilty to being in possession of a firearm and ammunition without licence after they appeared before Magistrate Sueann Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.

The allegation is that on September 2 at Hill 9, Matthew’s  Ridge, North West District, Igna Stnelkou and Sergei Kuznetcor had in their possession one .38 special revolver along with twelve matching rounds.

Attorney Nigel Hughes who represented the defendants made a bail application stating that the accused are miners and it is impossible that both of them could have had one particular firearm at the said time on their persons. Hughes further added that if the court finds it favourable to grant the men bail, they are willing to lodge their passports at the police station, so that they are not a flight risk.

The prosecution objected to the defendants being  granted bail.

The matter will be called again on September 6.
