Norton St man accused of stealing woman’s gold chain

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded to prison a Norton Street man accused of larceny, when he on Friday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

The allegation is that on August 24, Leroy Williams stole from the person of Donna Fordyce; one gold chain valued $80,000, property of the said Fordyce.

The accused, of Lot 71 Norton Street pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read.
When given a chance to speak, Fordyce told the court that she would be very grateful if the accused can gave her compensation in the sum of $80,000 for the article in order to bring an end to the matter.

However, Williams told the court that it was the police officers who urged the woman to say that value of the chain is as mentioned in the charge. “At first she say the chain cost $40,000 but it is the police who told her to say it cost more,” he said.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the man has pending matters of a similar nature before the court. It also urged the court to consider the prevalence of the offence.
Williams was ordered to return to court on October 24.
