Jamaican fined $30,000 for overstaying, to be deported

A Jamaican citizen who overstayed his time in Guyana was yesterday fined $30,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and he will also be deported.

On September 12, Michael Bernette was found in the county of Essequibo as an illegal citizen in Guyana.

The man who told the court that he does not have any previous matters pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The attorney who represented Bernette made an application for bail but this was denied.

The accused was told by the court that an application was made for his deportation and he would be kept in police custody until he is removed from Guyana.
