Sport Ministry hosts Wellness Day activity

As part of Caribbean Wellness Day activities, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will host a day of sports at the Carifesta Sports Complex today.

The ministry’s parliamentary secretary, Steve Ninvalle told Stabroek News that the idea is to have working people engage in some amount of physical activity which is essential to achieving good health. He noted that persons ought to have a certain amount of physical activity each day and Thursday’s event will be a stepping stone for this.

According to Ninvalle, it was out of consultations among members of the organising committee which comprised himself, the Director of Youth, Carl Brandon; Principal Personnel Officer acting, Alexis Sullivan and Dale France, that the idea for a day of fun was born.

Ninvalle noted that Caribbean Wellness Day was created by Caricom, with the signing of the Port of Spain Declaration in 2007. He said in signing the declaration, governments made several commitments including the observance of the Caribbean Wellness Day on the second Saturday in September.

Today’s event starts at 1 pm and will be declared open by Minister Frank Anthony. Among the activities planned will be five-a-side football match.
