East Coast man jailed for 25 years for carnal knowledge

Tyrone Mortley was yesterday sentenced to 25 years each on two counts of carnal knowledge, which will run concurrently, when he appeared in the High Court before Justice Winston Patterson.

According to reports, Mortley had carnal knowledge of a girl less than 15 years of age between April 1 and30, 2006. The second count was that the accused had carnal knowledge of the said girl between 15 and 16 on October 28, 2006.

In December of that year, the girl was discovered to be 9 weeks pregnant and this led to the arrest of the accused.

The jury, consisting of eight women and 4 men, deliberated for 2 hours before returning with a majority verdict 10-2 of guilty for both counts.

It was noted that Mortley admitted his crime to the members of the jury in two statements, oral and written, during the trial.

Justice Patterson indicated to Mortley that he was being lenient.

Mortley, who resides on the East Coast Demerara, was represented by Attorney-at-Law Compton Richardson while State Prosecutors were Judith Gildharie-Mursalin and Teshana James-Lake.
