Man, 63, denies assaulting his partner

A 63-year-old man who was charged with assaulting his partner was yesterday placed on $25,000 bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.

The allegation is that on September 20 at Tucville, Lindsay Griffith assaulted Jasmine Fraser.

The Tucville resident pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

According to the facts presented to the court by the prosecution, on the day in question the defendant returned home drunk when an argument ensued between him and the VC. The prosecution stated that the man picked up a knife and a cutlass and lashed the woman across her face.

The prosecution further stated that the woman called the police station and reported the matter.

The prosecution objected to bail since the man does not have any other place of abode.

The accused, a carpenter by trade, was then asked by the court if he had any other place to remove to and he gave an address of a relative who resides on the West Coast Demerara.

The magistrate later placed Griffith on $25,000 bail as well as a bond to keep the peace pending the termination of the matter. The case will be called again on September 26 at Court Five.
