Global crisis threatens Suriname’s development plans – Bouterse

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – President Desi Bouterse began his annual address yesterday with a warning that the new looming economic crisis in Europe could have a hard-hitting effect on Suriname. This in turn could also have an effect on the mega-investments planned by the government. “The fear of a recession is very great, which will certainly affect Suriname’s economy. It is necessary for us to reflect on what could be ahead of us. The biggest fear during an economic recession is a drop in the prices of export products. And this will mean less revenue for the government. Should it come to pass that we must take stock and scale down certain projects, we will give you the guarantee that the most essential needs of our people such as education, health care and food will be guaranteed,” Bouterse said.
