Hairdresser remanded on ganja charge

A 24-year-old hairdresser who allegedly had 418 grammes of cannabis in her possession for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday remanded to prison after she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on September 30, at Lot 123 Meadow Brook Gardens, Shondell Straker had in her possession 418 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

According to the facts presented to the court by the prosecution on the day in question, acting on the information received, a police sergeant went to the Meadow Brook home, identified himself as a policeman in plain clothes and carried out a search in the defendant’s wardrobe.

A quantity of leaves, seeds and stems was discovered, which was suspected to be cannabis. The woman was taken to the police station and items weighed in her presence.

Straker’s lawyer made an unsuccessful application for bail, pointing out that the room in which the cannabis was discovered was occupied by several other persons.
The case was adjourned until October 18.
