Police probing murder of miner at Baramita

The police say they are probing the murder of miner Johanna Baird, 22 years of Baramita, NWD, which occurred at about 0100h today at Baramita.

A release from the police said that investigations showed that  Baird and a fifteen- year-old youth were imbibing at a shop at Baramita, when it is alleged that an argument developed between them. It is alleged that Baird slapped the suspect who then stabbed him to his neck.

Police said that the suspect left and returned with a cutlass, but was confronted by another man in the shop during which he was wounded to his chest and abdomen.

Baird was pronounced DOA at the Matthews Ridge Hospital, NWD, while the suspect has been admitted a patient under guard.

It is the latest in a series of murders in the interior during drinking sprees. The mining regions have also seen an upsurge in murders by bandits and through domestic rows.
