Man struck girlfriend with spade – court hears

A man who was charged with hitting his girlfriend with a spade because of a misunderstanding between them was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation is that on October 16 at Ruimveldt, George-town, Allen Campbell unlawfully and maliciously wounded Gillian Answick.

The man who resides at Lot 23 West Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court.

In narrating the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that the two parties in the matter live together and on the day in question the duo had a misunderstanding and as result the defendant became annoyed and picked up a spade and dealt the VC several lashes about her body. He added that the matter was reported at the East La Peni-tence Police Station and the accused was later arrested and charged.

After presenting the facts the prosecutor stated that he had no objection to bail but asked that it be granted in a substantial sum and that conditions be also  imposed.

The application was granted by the magistrate who placed the accused on $40,000 bail and a bond to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.
