Bandits take couple from restaurant to seawall; grab cash, jewellery

A couple was the latest target of gun-toting bandits; attacked at a Sheriff Street Chinese restaurant on Wednesday and forced to drive to the seawall before being relived of cash and jewellery.

Police, acting promptly on information, chased after the bandits who escaped leaving their getaway car behind.

According to a police press release issued yesterday, around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday businessman Heeralall Sookdeo, 56, of Courbane Park, Annandale, East Coast Demerara and a female friend were held up by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, at a Chinese restaurant on Sheriff Street.

The perpetrators took the two victims in Sookdeo’s motor vehicle to the seawall at Ogle, ECD, where they were robbed of a total of $275,000, two cell phones and their personal jewellery, the release said.

The police responded quickly to the report received and at the Ogle Seawall they observed two men driving away in a car as they approached. The police gave chase during which the car ran into a ditch, but the men managed to escape.

The car has been detained by the police as the investigations continue, the release added.
