Man fined $10,000 for assault, remanded on two other charges

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry imposed a $10,000 fine on a man who admitted assaulting a woman and remanded him on charges that he damaged the woman’s property, when he yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that on August 11 Kevin Abrahams unlawfully assaulted Karen Beckles and on the same day he damaged one television set and a chair set while making use of indecent behaviour. The man admitted that he assaulted Beckles on October 23 but pleaded not guilty to the other charges.

The prosecutor told the court that on August 11 the defendant took a piece of wood and lashed Beckles and then he allegedly proceeded to damage the said property. Then, on October 23, he was playing music when the virtual complainant asked him to lower it and he became annoyed and cuffed her to the face.

Abrahams told the court that he was intoxicated and a fight ensued between himself and the VC and that he had suffered a burst head as a result of the fight.

He was fined $10,000 or the alternative of two weeks in prison and he was remanded on the other charges. Abrahams was ordered to appear in court today.
