Suspects held but no ID in Foulis businessman’s murder

Four weeks after Foulis businessman Purushotam Nauth was fatally shot in a robbery, police have managed to apprehend eight persons who were placed on an identification parade.

According to the man’s wife Latchmedai, at sometime during or after her husband’s cremation, suspects were arrested by police and placed on an identification parade. Nauth’s cousin Somal Persaud, who was his driver at the time of the incident, was called in to identify the suspects, but Latchmedai said he told her he did not recognize any of the men. She said that since then she has heard of no further developments from the police.

Along with Latchmedai, Nauth has left to mourn his two sons, the youngest of whom will be celebrating his fourteenth birthday on Friday. The woman said that this son, whose name is Vicky, was closest to his father and has the most difficulty getting over his death. She said that though “it’s kinda rough to deal with” the family is coping and trying to continue the business, as Nauth would have wanted.

Nauth was attacked and robbed by two men around 7.45am on Monday, October 4. Nauth was in the company of Persaud, who was driving him in minibus BMM 6460. The robbers used two cars to sandwich the bus and Persaud told Stabroek News that the robber close to him hit the window with the gun, broke it, and they both began demanding “the money,” which was lying in a haversack on the bus floor in front of Nauth.

He said the bandit on Nauth’s side of the bus suggested that the other shoot him, so he closed his eyes and awaited the hit. Persaud said he heard the gunshot, and on opening his eyes he saw that his boss had been shot. He said the men grabbed the bag and returned to their respective vehicles. At the time of the incident, Nauth was on his way to the bank to deposit the $8M.
