Seaman assaulted, threatened to kill wife

-court hears

Alvin Leitch was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a charge that he unlawfully assaulted his common-law wife and threatened to kill her.

Leitch was granted bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on charges of assaulting Nafiza Gafoor, so as to cause her actual bodily harm, and using threatening language to her. The offences were allegedly committed on October 26, at Waterloo Street, Georgetown

After the charges were read, the Magistrate asked Gafoor if she wanted to give evidence against Leitch, and the woman told the court “is me husband” and declined to do so. Pointing out that the couple was not legally married, the Magistrate compelled Gafoor to give evidence.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that Leitch and Gafoor had an argument after he accused her of being unfaithful while he was away at sea. The accused then allegedly dealt the woman several blows about her body and threatened to kill her. Gafoor then made a police report and the man was arrested and charged.

The court told Leitch that he has to find another place of abode until the determination of the matter. The man readily provided his mother’s Lot 81 Stewartville Housing Scheme address to the court. He was granted $25,000 for each of the two offences and was ordered to return to court Monday.
