Blygezight man severely beaten in home invasion

A 56-year-old man was attacked and beaten in his home by three bandits almost a week ago and is still terribly traumatized over the incident.

Mohabir Sugrim, of Lot 246 Blygezight Gardens, Campbellville, was awakened to a shirt over his head not long after he had viewed the Deepavali motorcade from his bridge with some relatives, who left for their nearby home immediately after the floats had passed.

According to the man’s daughter, the door was not properly secured since the padlock was misplaced. “He just bolt the gate and pull in the door because he couldn’t find the padlock,” the woman explained.

Sugrim, who was home alone at the time, went to his living room where he was watching television. “I don’t know if he nod away but he thought it was a sheet they were using but it was his own shirt. They draw the two sleeves and choke him with it,” his daughter related to Stabroek News yesterday.

The man was then severely beaten with a “nipper”, particularly to the head and upper body.

Sugrim was then asked where the money was kept and he answered “in the store room”. The man’s daughter said the keys to the store room and all the rooms in the house were in her father’s pocket and were found by the perpetrators. In the store room, a sum of money was found.

The woman said that her father fell unconscious after the beating and his face and hands were duct-taped. Also, a plastic bag was placed over the man’s head.

The man’s daughter said it appeared that the men were about to make their escape when they saw a shed at the back of the house which would lead them into her brother’s room.

A video camera, a G-Shock watch and a hat were taken from the boy’s room.

With the keys, the men unlocked all the doors in the upper flat and ransacked the home, taking valuables as they went along.

“My mom passed away only September 19 and we always keep her door locked. They opened it and ransacked her room too. They took everything… jewellery and money,” the woman said.

Her brother, who is the only one residing with Sugrim, returned home with a relative sometime after 1 am and found all the lights in the house on and all the doors flung open. His sister said he immediately knew something was amiss. Near to the dining table, a conscious Sugrim was found, with the duct tape around his nose barely pulled apart. “They left my father to die but he managed to make his way to the table and used the edge of it to get the tape away from his nose to breathe,” she explained.

She further stated that her brother then alerted her, their relatives that lived nearby and subsequently, the police, who arrived as the family was transporting Sugrim to the hospital. As such, the report was made the following day.

At the hospital, they were told that Sugrim suffered injuries to the head and had lost three teeth. Also, stab wounds were found on both of the man’s hands and have led to infections.

She described the losses as immeasurable and indicated that the money that was stolen was of various currencies making it hard to give an estimate, in addition to the jewellery that was taken.

Meanwhile, Sugrim was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital on Saturday but has been left so traumatized that his children are afraid to take him home. As a result, the man is staying with a relative while the family is trying to have things put in place back at the house.

His daughter stated that she has since taken him to a private hospital for a check up. Sugrim has not yet given his statement to the police.

The woman recalled a robbery the family experienced earlier this year when the perpetrators escaped with a sum of cash.

Police, she said, had no luck capturing the two perpetrators in that instance.
